7. Using the Profile

Previous Section Previous Page Contents Next Page Next Section

Creating a custom input profile is an essential part of successful color management. However, even a great profile, if used incorrectly, will result in failure. Since inCamera creates colorimetrically accurate profiles that conform to ICC specifications, we could technically end this User Guide right here. There are so many different ways that ICC profiles can be used, it would be impossible to describe them in general, much less in any sort of detail that would be useful to anyone.

However, since Adobe Photoshop is so ubiquitous, we will step into Adobe's realm just long enough to describe how inCamera's profiles might be used within that program. Even in Photoshop though, there are many different ways to use profiles. The pages that follow are just our recommendations — those familiar with color management in Photoshop may deviate from these as they wish.

Photoshop Setup This describes a recommended way to set Photoshop up for using input profiles.

Editorial Interpretation This describes how the science of profiles coexists with the art of photography.
